Husqvarna 371xp 5.1HP 71cc chainsaw for $200 bucks with 22", 20" and 18" bars. Every once in a while you get lucky. This kid didn't know much about saws. Needs a little TLC and a tuneup but you usually can't buy this kind of power for less then $900 new, $450 used. Also just got news that I'm not getting laid off in the latest downsize and bought this (much needed) saw in celebration. What a great day

A wee bit envious. That's a great score. Nice saw and 3 bars too boot. Chains for every bar?

Great, now you can carve archtops.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I was thinking fret saw but it might be a little underpowered lol! Just a 22" chain but I'm going to grab a new 28" bar and chain anyway. I've got a large maple down that has spalted nicely and is ready to cut up but it's pretty a little to big for a 22" bar.

I'd be happy to tell you where to find this huge, old myrtle. And dozens more. :)

Good for some Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

Yeah mesquite is no joke. Maybe try a carbide blade or watch craigslist for something used and bigger.

Thats a beast, my brother has a 365 Special (same motor not sure what the actual differences are) and with a sharp chain you can "push it through" just about anything. We cleared 6 acres on my place, started the week before Thanksgiving and finished up late April, 26 gallons of premix between two saws

The 365 and 371 are the similar if not the same motor with different specs. The 365 is 4.8 HP 65 CC saw with a max Rev (loaded speed) of 9,300 RPM and the 371 is 5.1 HP 71 CC saw with a max loaded Rev of 9,600. Very similar, just a little more power in the 71. I can't imagine needing more power than that on the East coast unless I ran into a an exceptionally huge walnut or maple tree. That's all I'm really looking for at the moment. I just ordered a 32" bar and chain for this thing and that should take care just about anything I need.
